The School Board is responsible for the operations of all McMinn County schools. The Board selects an administrator to handle the day to day operations of the schools. As of 2000, the board consists of ten members -  two elected from each of the county's five districts. The term of service is four years with the elections staggered.

The School Board meets the 2nd Thursday of each month, usually in the Central Office at 216 North Jackson St. in Athens. Occasionally meetings are held at various schools so members can visit facilities and programs. Main office is located in the old Federal Building on White St. in Athens.

Note from the County Mayor's Office - The Board of Education appoints the Superintendent of Schools, which is presently Dr. John Forgety.
