Welcome To McMinn County, Tennessee
          Beautiful McMinn County is located between the cities of Chattanooga and Knoxville along the I-75 and U.S. 41 in Southeast Tennessee. McMinn County’s county seat is Athens with a population of 14,275 as of the 2008 census estimate. McMinn County is ranked as the 27th most populated county in Tennessee with 52,739 people as of the 2009 census estimate. The following cities, towns and communities are located within McMinn County: Athens, Calhoun, Claxton, Delano, Englewood, Etowah, Mount Verd, Niota, Riceville and Sweetwater.

          In 1819, McMinn County was formed from existing Indian lands and was named in honor of Joseph McMinn (1758-1824). During the Revolutionary War, Joseph McMinn was the commander of the militia and a member of the territorial legislature, the speaker of the Tennessee, eventually becoming governor of the great state of Tennessee.
